Shrink Terminology
Shrink Package Terminology

Shrink Appearance
The appearance of an over-wrapped package after shrinking at a specified temperature and conveyor setting.

Ballooning
A pillowing effect created when shrink film is exposed to hot air. Entrapped air expands when heated then slowly escapes through the air evacuation hole(s) resulting in an even shrink.

Deflate Hole
A hole made in the film which permits air within the package to escape as the film is shrinking.

Pin-perforated Air Evacuation Holes
Air evacuation holes applied using pins secured to a rotating roller, a machine with tape, or a shaft collar which slide onto a roller. These pins perforate the film as it passes over the roller.

Machinability
The ability of a film to form, fill, and seal on overwrapping equipment.

Trim (Scrap)
The edges of excess film which are severed from a package, generally found on trim-sealing equipment which utilizes center-folded film.
