Skin Packaging Board
Specially formulated paper that allows air to pass through.

Skin board is a specially formulated paper that is manufactured to allow air to pass throughout during the skin packaging process. The composite is usually solid bleached sulphate (SBS) for display type applications or corrugated for shipping applications. The quality of the board must be such that it is compatible with the ink and primer system, is porous enough to permit a vacuum to be drawn throughout and is strong enough to hold and display a product.

If the board is printed for display purposes, a heat activated adhesive coating is applied to the face of the board. During the skin packaging process, the plastic is heated and any wrinkles in the film are removed. The heated plastic is then lowered over and around the product and onto the board drawn by a vacuum. When the treated plastic meets the coated skin board, a bond is formed.

When multiple products are skinned in the same cycle, the individual cards can be separated by a knife, paper cutter of die cutter. Most finished packages have rounded corners and a hanger hole for display on peg hooks.

Skin board is available in any size you want and is determined by the size of the platen on your skin machine.

  • The most common sizes are 18” x 24”, 24” x 30”, 30” x 36”.
  • The most common thickness of SBS board is 24 point.
  • The most common thickness for corrugated in industrial applications is 200# test, C flute.
