The optional adjustable Flight Lug Infeed allows product to be hand loaded into the machine. Particularly useful for multipacking or collating of product.

Introduction

The SHANKLIN family of Automatic L-Sealers, with their compact design, gentle product feed and straight line product flow, are ideally suited for handling a wide variety of products, including flexible items such as packs of loose paper. The L-Seal design allows great flexibility and quick product change.

The SHANKLIN Models A-26A and A-27A Automatic L-Sealers, with adjustable height seal jaws, can automatically wrap a wide range of products, including high profile or short length items at speeds up to 35 packages per minute (up to 45 packages per minute with high speed gearing).

The Model A-28A also has adjustable height seal jaws, but since it is designed for larger products, it is equipped with a heavy duty discharge conveyor.

The optional adjustable Product Spacing Infeed Conveyor allows product to be randomly fed to the machine.

Description

The SHANKLIN Models A-26A, A-27A and A-28A Automatic L-Sealers are designed for ease of operation and reliability. Their rugged construction ensures consistent quality, performance and ease of integration into almost any production line. The machines, with their PLC controllers, make extensive use of low voltage proximity sensors (no moving parts) and effective fusing for increased reliability.

The in-line infeed and discharge conveyors are mounted on the same elevation to ensure smooth, single level product transfer through the machine. Adjustable height sealing jaws allow high or low profile products to be sealed. Each model has an optional closing discharge conveyor to allow short or flexible products to be fed through the machine. The A-28A has a standard heavy duty discharge conveyor to permit heavier products to be wrapped.Each model has an automatic film advance system, which allows light, flexible products to be fed through the machine with ease. Centerfolded film fed from the motorized film unwind system, mounted at the rear of the machine, passes over an adjustable film inverting head. The inverting head provides an opening in the film to receive the product, while ensuring positive film tracking and guidance, so that both webs of film will meet under the sealing jaw.

The entire sealing area is protected by an electrically interlocked transparent hood, allowing the sealing process to be safely observed. The hood can be easily lifted for full and easy access when required.

The optional adjustable Flight Bar Infeed simlifies hand loading product into the machine. Particularly useful for handling multipacks or packs with dissimilar products.

Operation

The SHANKLIN Models A-26A, A-27A and A-28A accept randomly spaced product, fed either automatically or by hand.

Product is fed into the machine and through a film inverting head by the infeed conveyor. As the product advances through the head, it is wrapped in plastic film. As the product passes into the sealing area, it interrupts a photoelectric sensor, which starts the discharge conveyor and automatic film advance system, drawing the film and product into the sealing area. When the product is correctly located in the sealing area, the film advance and both conveyors stop, and the sealing jaws make the seal. The L-Seal bar makes the side seal and trailing edge seal, at the same time sealing the leading edge of the succeeding package and simultaneously severing individual packages from the web of film. After completing the seal, the jaws open and the discharge conveyor carries the package out of the machine.

The Optional Closing Conveyor is designed to handle shorter products by bridging the gap in the sealing area. The infeed roller of the closing conveyor retracts clear of the sealing jaws prior to making the seal, and upon completing the seal, extends to receive the next product.

Shrinking

A SHANKLIN Shrink Tunnel, located at the discharge end of the L-Sealer, shrinks the film tightly around product to give the completed package an attractive appearance. The comprehensive line of SHANKLIN Shrink Tunnels meets the needs of virtually all applications.

The optional EZ Load Compact Centerfolder allows the use of flat film.

Changeover

he SHANKLIN Models A-26A, A-27A and A-28A have been designed and built for maximum versatility, incorporating easy product and size changeover.

For product width, adjustments are made by using the slide table and table lock on the A-26A and A-27A, and the hand crank on the A-28A, to move the infeed conveyor and film inverting head in and out.

For product height, adjustments are made by using the hand cranks to adjust the opening of the film inverting head, and to set the elevation of the sealing jaws and the film advance mechanism to the center of the product. The height of the jaw opening is adjusted by the air cylinder toggle for the jaws to clear the package.

The photoelectric sensor system automatically compensates for package length change, usually resulting in no furtherlength adjustment.

When changing product width or height, it may be necessary to use new film width.

Controls and Adjustments

The SHANKLIN Models A-26A, A-27A and A-28A are equipped with programmable controllers for simplicity of wiring and ease of troubleshooting. This allows for easy machine setup and adjustment, assists in operator setup, performs diagnostic checks and controls machine sequencing.

Machine operating speed, sealing arm speed and height, temperature and dwell time, infeed conveyor speed and width, package height, and film unwind direction are easily adjustable on all models.
